Ben Shaver is an award-winning singer, music director, vocal coach, pianist, and educator. Ben Shaver holds a BM in Vocal Performance from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Praised for his "positively powerful sound" by D.C. Metro Theater Arts, Ben Shaver entices his audiences with his vocal prowess. He has performed on stages in the United States, Italy, Austria, and Georgia, most notably Carnegie Hall and worked with directors such as David Schweitzer, Garnett Bruce, Marin Alsop, Michael Repper, and Edward Polochick. He is a winner of the Baltimore Music Club competition and received an honorary mention from the Friday Morning Music Club competition. For eight years he has shared the stage as both music director and performer as a company member of StillPointe Theatre. He has worked as both a performer and music director with theaters such as StillPointe Theatre, REPStage, NY Theatre Barn, Richmond Triangle Players, and Iron Crow Theatre. In addition to working with theaters, he has worked with numerous age groups at institutions in the DMV area including Towson University, Community College of Baltimore County, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Adventure Theatre - Musical Theatre Academy, University of Mary Washington, G.W. Carver Center for the Arts and Technology, Patapsco Center for the Arts, Sudbrook Magnet Middle School, St. Timothy’s School, Loyola Blakefield, Roland Park Country School, and Maryvale Preparatory School.
He is very passionate about new works and has been fortunate to premiere several works: Stinney: a new opera by Frances Pollock, The Toll by Jake Runestad, Don Cesarino by Ethan Braun, and Rosen & Hallerstein’s Music School: The Musical. He is currently on the writing team of To Whom It May Concern, a new musical about the life of Ryan White with Joe Barros (NY Theatre Barn) and Ryan Haase (StillPointe Theatre). From 2017-2022, Mr. Shaver was the Director of Music and Theatre and House Faculty at St. Timothy’s School in Stevenson, MD where he taught MYP & IB Theatre & Music, directed the a cappella group Moongates, and directed numerous afterschool productions. His students have gone on to continue their passion for music and the stage at schools such as University of the Arts, Carnegie Hall, Boston Conservatory, University of Virginia, Washington and Lee University, College of William and Mary, University of Maryland, and Peabody Conservatory. Mr. Shaver planned the International Baccalaureate ISTA Theatre Conference for the Americas hosted at St. Timothy’s School in June 2022.
Since 2015, he has been the Director of Music at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Potomac, MD. During his time at Geneva, he has prepared and performed several major works with instrumental ensembles including Handel’s Messiah, Randall Thompson’s Frostiana, Schubert’s Mass in G, and several Christmas and Easter cantatas by Lloyd Larson, Joel Raney, and Joseph Martin. It was an absolute honor to have the granddaughter of Robert Frost attend his concert of Randall Thompson’s Frostiana: Seven Country Songs, which are choral settings of the poet’s work. In addition to preparing service music, he also directs the delightful Geneva Handbell Choir. In June 2022, Geneva had their first Praise Music Sunday service where the singers performed works by Kirk Franklin, Donald Lawrence, and Hillsong with a 6 piece band. He is on the planning committee of the Massanetta Church Music Conference.
As an advocate for multi-linguism, he enjoys returning to Italy annually to teach English as a second language through songs, games, and theatre both with Hello City Camps!, a company he co-founded in 2015, and independent camps throughout the country.
